Biography: UMich Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellow (2023) & Global Press Editor
The ARENA Program (Amateur Radio Emergency Newsroom Alliance) represents the efforts of Global Press Journalist, Maria Arce. Global Press, founded in 2006, is an organization comprised of female journalists who report the news in underserved populations throughout the world.
During 2023, María was accepted into the prestigious University of Michigan Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellowship Program. Her writings were directed towards learning about amateur radio and how to effectively use amateur radio at improving communications between the newsroom and the public, on the island of Puerto Rico, following natural disasters. Maria has written extensively on the topic of emergency communications, provided instructions as to how to obtain an amateur radio license and helped to institute a WinLink system of communication for the island.
